COMPETITION NUMBER 1740
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drag racing is a competition in which two vehicles compete to be the first to cross a set finish line from a standing start, and in a straight line for a 1/4 mile (1,320 ft.). Racers can reach the finish line as quickly as 4.5  seconds, with finishing speeds ranging from up to over 330 mph, depending upon the type of vehicle being used. The faster vehicles typically need a parachute to slow down at the end of the track.

First gaining popularity in the 1950's, the sport steadily grew in popularity and spread across the globe. By 2010, there are hundreds of dragstrips in operation around the world.
The name Drag Racing came about by cars launching from the starting line so violently that the car would stand up on its rear wheels (" wheely") so high that the rear bumper would drag down the track.

Our Class, Super Comp is the fastest of the heads-up Super Classes (8.90 index). Super Comp is composed primarily of dragsters and some highly modified door cars. Engine, chassis and body modifications are virtually unlimited, though all entries must adhere to NHRA safety standards. Four and six-cylinder-powered entries may have a minimum weight of 1,000 pounds; all others cannot weigh less than 1,350 pounds.

Most Super Comp cars are capable of running well under the 8.90 index, but they use a number of electronic aids, including a timer and an adjustable throttle (also known as a throttle stop), to run close to the index without running faster (breaking out). In the IHRA, the class is called Quick Rod. It is the fastest of the three Rod Classes. Besides Dragsters, there are also Door Slammers, Altered, and Roadsters.
